Smile Renovations: Dental Floss

Posted .

How much do you know about dental floss? Even though it is something you should use every day, many people know surprisingly little about it. In addition, many people may be flossing incorrectly or not enough.

If you have any questions about what products to use, speak with your dentist for suggestions. Try to use floss that will not tear or shred upon use, and that will slide easily between your teeth.

You should start with an 18 inch long strand which will allow you to use a fresh section of floss for each tooth. Wrap most of the floss around your middle fingers, leaving two to three inches of floss. Focus on angling the floss in a “c” shape around each tooth, and floss under, and then away from the gumline. To prevent cross-contamination, never use the same section of a strand more than once. After you’re finished, throw the used floss away.
